September 2007 – ITCO II - Project: Tank Containers with special grinding pattern. Field test since Sept. 2007

Based on the findings of a previous project, cotac europe, Robogrind, SGS and

HOYER began a field test in cooperation with ITCO in September. The subject is to evaluate the impact of surface roughness on corrosion resistance and cleanability. In doing so we hope to define the optimum surface quality that would reduce the costs for internal tank maintenance and for cleaning, and thus to set new standards for surface roughness and the process of stainless steel tank treatment.

The field test is running for twenty months. During this time three brand new HOYER-Tank Containers will be used in daily operation with changing products. The interior walls have been subdivided into segments with different surface roughnesses. The grinding has been done with grinding robots of Robogrind, which have been used successfully for several years at cotac locations at Rotterdam, Antwerp and Dormagen.

After each assignment the Tank Containers are cleaned and maintained at one of these sites by personell especially trained for this project. They are checked for discoloration and product residues in the test segments after each cleaning process. At the workshops we perform monthly check-ups, looking for signs of corrosion and for changes in the wall roughness. We also check whether the last product affects the ground areas in any way or leaves any residues.

The findings are filled into check report forms and are collected at Dormagen to be analyzed after the end of the field test.

The project is monitored throughout by SGS, the world’s largest company for inspection and classification.

We will keep you informed about new developments!
